Of course, these days fitness tracking would probably need to be added. A true smarter watch would accommodate those needs as well. Those are the reasons for the other two watches in my collection (you can see the four of them in the featured image). Right now, sports nuts need to buy watches with controls that make lap timing easy, while divers need better waterproofing and different timing features.

An alarm I could set from my phone, and some quick Google Now/Glance style cards with weather or appointment updates might be nice. Speaking of smartwatches, there are probably a couple other features I’d be happy to borrow from them. That’s a big advantage of having an electronic display. The Apple Watch can apparently be flipped around so the crown is on the left. Of course the ultimate is solar-power, like many current, simpler, models, but adding the GPS is likely to make that an impossibility for quite a long time.Īpple’s Watch does get high marks on my next wishlist item - support for lefties, like me. It needs to be measured in weeks, at least, if not months or years. Smartwatches brag about battery life in hours. I know its possible to stick a GPS in a watch, but it leads to the next sticking point - battery life. Leaving my phone on with the GPS running to log long days is a recipe for pain. Speaking of GPS, my smarter watch would also let me keep a log of my movements, replacing the thumb-sized i-GotU that I use for the purpose.

First, for travelers, easy management of two timezones. Let’s talk about what a better, smarter watch could do. But it seems that the tech industry is determined to create some type of new smartphone accessory it has unfortunately christened the smartwatch - which so far is of little interest either to me or to most watch wearers. So I’d be first in line to buy a watch that did more of what I need it to do - in other words, a smarter watch. I’ve even got separate watches for US & overseas travel, each of which has different features. The result is that I’m a bit of a watch junkie - always on the lookout for a version that will do everything I want without breaking the bank. As I travel - especially as someone who is often in charge of keeping track of a group of fellow travelers - I rely heavily on my watch to keep us on time. I stand proudly as one of the diminishing number of humans that still wears a wristwatch.
